This month we look at training our deep neck flexors , the ‘core’ muscles of the neck region. These muscles help to stabilise and control head and neck alignment.
With the ever increasing amount of time spent in front of the computer , ipad and phones a forward head position or ‘poking chin’ has become evermore common. This position places the weight of the head in front of the plumb line of the body, the upper neck over extends and the lower neck over flexes. The natural curve of the neck is lost and we can get loss of movement and pain as a result. The stronger more global muscles of the neck can become over active , (SCM in particular), and also contribute to headaches and even jaw problems.
Learning how to get a better head and neck position and then training the deep stabilisers of the neck is as important as your ‘core ‘ training for the low back and pelvis.
Try these 3 different exercises interspersed throughout the day in combination with some deep breathing and postural cues.
